Author´s words:

This edition of Fishes of the Brazilian Coast, altogether with the reviewed and updated Portuguese fourth edition of Peixes, Costa Brasileira, comes from my passionate necessity of sharing and talking about the Brazilian marine coastal fish, collaborating to its knowledge.

This work results from six decades of research efforts inside and outside water, alone or in good company, visiting museums, fishing boats, reefs, libraries, rocky shores, aquaria, oceanic islands, mangroves, beaches, and taking a lot of fruitful discussions, stories, experiences and opinions from scientists, fishermen and travels in internet, around our coast and overseas in Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Anyway, the book represents the final presentation of many observations and questions, from the most careful to the most preposterous, and it gave rise from my wish of exploring and understanding our Blue Amazon, the Marine Brazil.

THE BLUE AMAZON

ANOTHER COUNTRY IN THE ATLANTIC

Throughout our history, the sea has been a hurdle to overcome, a path to be followed, a bond between the nature and our very existence. The first occupation of Brazilian territory by Europeans began from the coastline, where they found our longstanding indigenous civilizations. From the Treaty of Tordesillas to Contemporary History, a brand-new country has been created bit by bit, in mathematical fashion: the Marine Brazil, the Blue Amazon.

Regarding only the fishes, which are present in the planet since 400 million years ago, at least 2,150 species are reported from Blue Amazon. Given that to May 2023, about 18.000 marine fish species have been described, it means that at least 12% of all this diversity lives therein … and dozens are yet to be discovered!

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT BOOK

Rubinho de Almeida Prado

Sport fishing professional for 33 years.

Authority on the subject, he is the pioneer of fishing programs for
TV in Brazil, introducing the “catch and release” culture in our country
country and considered the best-known sport fisherman in Brazil.

After 7 years of research, together with biologist Alec Kruse Zeinad, he published the book “Peixes Fluviais do Brasil do Brasil – Espécies Esportivas”, a true bible on the subject

I felt very honored to be invited to write the preface of the book “Fishes of the Brazilian Coast” by Alfredo Carvalho Filho, as this is not an ordinary book, but a bible about the rich ichthyofauna of Brazilian marine waters.

Alfredo is a scholar of this subject and author of dozens of scientific works. He has dedicated himself hard, throughout his life, to tireless hours of research and new discoveries about the world of “blue water”, with the aim of providing and making vast knowledge available to a very eclectic and diverse audience.

This edition makes the eyes of scientists, biologists, ichthyologists, students, teachers, nature lovers shine and, as expected, it is an immense contribution to fishermen who are passionate about sport fishing. When reading this book, I was surprised by its scope and it immensely expanded my knowledge about the marine environment and more than 1,000 species of fish so well diagnosed and their habits explored in depth by the author.

In one of our conversations, Alfredo told me that, when he was little fishing, his father, when catching a different fish, always asked three questions:

“What fish is this? Is it good to eat? Is it dangerous?”

I, Rubinho, can guarantee that your father would be very proud to read your work and would be absolutely pleased to have all his questions answered very well!

This book is a true source of wisdom about Brazilian marine life. It’s gratifying to see how it can cover so many fields, from science to the passion for sport fishing. I am sure that this fourth edition will be a valuable contribution to all those interested in the vast world of the oceans.

“Fishes of the Brazilian Coast” is an easy-to-read book, which not only cannot be missing from the library of sports fishing lovers, but should also be left at the head of the bed, as it is eternal reference material and for new knowledge.

Congratulations, Alfredo, for the work you have been dedicating yourself to for years and thank you very much for allowing us to have access to so much knowledge.

This book provides a comprehensive summary of information about the world of Brazilian shore fishes. Although this English-language edition of the book is targeted mainly to English speaking marine-fish biologists, it will also be of great use to anglers and nature enthusiasts who don’t speak Portuguese. This work will provide readers with a comprehensive and detailed overview of the many different species that make up this unique regional fauna. Most fish species have one or more photos and its diagnostic features are described in sufficient detail, together with information on its habitat, behavior, geographical distribution, common English and Portuguese names and features that allow it to be distinguished from similar species. The large (1000+ entries) literature section is divided into sources of basic ichthyological information, general taxonomic sources that cover multiple families and sources for each family. I can enthusiastically recommend this one. The simultaneous release of a companion ebook will greatly increase portability of its contents and allow for both regular updates and digital word searches for specific subjects or species.

Fishes of the Brazilian Coast is an unusual book, as it targets amateur fishermen and people attracted to our rich fish fauna, as well as professional ichthyologists. Its dual nature apart, the book achieves its duties to the readers. The amateurs will find the book enjoyable, with its well readable sections complemented with illustrations, and the professionals will find numerous novelties peppered through the text. A book to be enjoyed by varied kinds of readers.
The book has an attractive design. The illustrations are clear enough for most species, and the reader will find them very useful. Information about each species in the book is presented in a precise way. I particularly like the “Habitat and behavior” section, as I am a sucker for natural history. There is a lot of novel information in this section, and both amateurs and professional ichthyologists will benefit from the input. The “Fisheries and edibility” section is a very good idea to put in practice by people who enjoy fishing for sport and recreation, besides the ones that like cooking.
I quote here a phrase that pleased me much and surely will please a good portion of readers as well: “Novelties on the book will be brought each year and an online version will be accessible in “Peixes, Costa Brasileira” or ”Fishes from the Brazilian Coast” website”. There it is! The book is a lifetime achievement.
